Cow’s milk

Whole milk has no fat removed and contains the highest percentage of fat of around 3.8% – it has the creamiest taste due to the higher fat content. It is great for making a good coffee! Full cream milk (whole milk) is what most baristas will use as it produces and holds a great silky frothiness!

Semi-skimmed milk contains less than 2% fat

Skimmed milk contains zero fat but doesn’t have the same taste as milk containing some fat.

Lactose-free milk is real cow’s milk but the natural sugar, lactose, has been broken down. It still contains the same essential nutrients, including calcium, protein, vitamin D and potassium, as the other types of milk. Perfect option for people who are lactose intolerant as it is easier to digest

Alternatives to cow’s milk

Each type of milk has its pros and cons depending on a person’s diet, health, nutritional needs, or personal taste preferences or requirements.

Soya Milk – smooth, creamy and slightly sweet.  Soya milk is a plant-based drink that is made by soaking and grinding soyabeans, boiling the mixture, and filtering. It is a stable emulsion of oil, water and protein. Lactose free, can help to lower cholesterol levels, contains isoflavones which is an anti-oxidant and some studies have shown that soya milk also contains a phytochemical substance called geinstein that is thought to inhibit the formation of blood vessels that assist in the growth of small tumours. Some studies have linked the consumption of soya milk to cancer prevention.

Almond Milk – slightly sweet, nutty and creamy. Almond milk is made by blending almonds with water and then straining the mixture to remove the solids. It can also be made by adding water to almond butter. It is a popular choice for vegans and those who are allergic or intolerant to dairy produce.

Coconut Milksweet and creamy with slight coconut flavour.  Coconut milk is found inside coconuts or is produced by squeezing the liquid from the coconut flesh and adding water. Coconut milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and is low in calories. As well as being very high in nutrients coconut milk also contains beneficial fat called lauric acid which is easily absorbed and used by the body for energy.  Coconut milk is completely free from dairy, lactose, soy, nuts or grains, it’s a good option for anyone allergic to dairy and nut- or grain-based milks, plus it’s vegan and good for plant-based eaters.

Goats Milk – creamy, sweet and mild.  Goat’s milk is low in cholesterol, contains less lactose than cow’s milk and can usually be consumed by those with a lactose intolerance . Goat’s milk is nutritionally similar to cow’s milk but is easier to digest, is higher in protein, calcium, vitamin B6 amongst many other nutrients.

Oat Milk – mild and sweet.  Oat milk is produced by the pre-soaking oats which are hulled into broken fragments.  Oat milk can also help to improve the nervous system, is loaded with essential nutrients, low in fat and calories, cholesterol free and high in soluble fibre.  Oat milk is popular among vegans and vegetarians and is often a substitute for dairy.
